Just 33 square miles, San Marcos is located in the heart of North San Diego County. The wonderful combination of small town living and economic growth and development lead many San Diegans to the community of San Marcos. With a rich history dating back to the late 1700's San Marcos has become a community on the rise, with residents content in the perfect mix of cool ocean breezes and economic stability and growth. San Marcos historic beginnings have been attributed to its discovery by Spanish troops pursuing a small band of Indians who had raided the flocks of the San Luis Rey Mission. Happening upon this lovely fertile valley they decided to name it Los Vallecitos de San Marcos (Little Valleys of St. Mark).
Without the congestion of a major metropolitan area, San Marcos offers the beauty of rolling hills and valleys. Located at an elevation of 570 feet and only 12 miles inland from the coast, the natural beauty of this town is breathtaking. Bordered to the west by the sandy beaches of the Pacific and to the east by the Laguna Mountains and Anza-Borrego Desert, San Marcos rarely has a less than perfect day. Fruit orchards, horse ranches and farmlands make it hard to believe that this suburban paradise is so close to urban civilization.
